“I need to think”: making room for yourself in a conversation
Give yourself a pause before automatically saying yes.
Sometimes “yes” arrives before we have noticed what we want. A pause can help you check your own response.
Start with a phrase
“I’ll check my plans and get back to you tonight.” “I need a little time.” “I can’t decide right now.” Choose words that sound natural to you.
Notice what is there
Do you have the time and energy? Are you agreeing because you want to or because you worry about disappointing someone? You do not need an immediate answer.
When it still feels difficult
A new way of communicating can feel unfamiliar. You can discuss the situation with a psychologist and explore boundaries in the context of your safety and circumstances.
